JUNTOS/TOGETHER HEADS BACK TO PUERTO RICO ON THIRD REBUILDING MISSION
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ, (March, 2019) – The US-based JUNTOS TOGETHER collaborative, in partnership with native Puerto Rican First Responder forces and municipalities, will once again work together on the island to assist in rebuilding efforts from the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. This is the third volunteer mission to Puerto Rico, which will take place from April 23 to May 6, 2019.
Already, JUNTOS TOGETHER restored several homes in 2018 and distributed needed supplies in 2017. On prior trips, volunteers, first responders, and contractors from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York repaired and rebuilt the roofs of homes on the island, performed basic electrical repairs and internal home salvaging, and donated to several home owners to complete other home repairs.
Partnering with firefighters, police officers, and mayoral offices in Puerto Rico, JUNTOS TOGETHER has identified eight homes in five towns across the island for the 2019 campaign. These homes still need major repairs two years post-Hurricane Maria. This past February, our reconnaissance team conducted an exploratory trip to Puerto Rico, and selected the eight homes in San Juan, Luquillo, Cayey, Utuado, and Loiza. We continue to raise funds to maximize our effort on the island.
“The unity between JUNTOS TOGETHER, native First Responder agencies and municipalities where we will rebuild is tremendous and treasured,” said campaign coordinator Cuqui Rivera. “All who contribute, however large or small must know that they have a direct part in making this possible, and we would not be able to do this without this support. Please join us in these efforts to rebuild homes and families.”
Launched in October 2017, Juntos Together (JT) is a consortium of individuals and community organizations in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico. We seek to strengthen the capacity of local grassroots organizations to rebuild and renew communities affected by natural disasters. This includes helping first responders enhance their response capacity and rebuilding local homes.
