For the past 45 years, PRAB has been honored to have been partners in the life’s journey of tens of thousands of individuals and families in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, and Central New Jersey. Back in 1969, a group of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic volunteers got together and offered English and GED classes to newly-arrived Latinos. By October 1971, they officially incorporated PRAB as a non-profit organization in New Jersey. Then, in 1974, PRAB opened New Jersey’s first full-time, bilingual/multicultural daycare center for children, ages 2½ to 5.
Over the years, PRAB has worked to be a transformative community institution that is a full participant in Central New Jersey life. We’ve become a “one-stop shop” with early childhood, youth, family, and community services. We’ve journeyed with Latino, White, African American, African, Asian, and other residents. We’ve also partnered with hundreds of individuals, families, businesses, community organizations, and public and elected officials. We’re proud that many participating individuals and families have become more self-sufficient, and have worked for a better life for themselves and others.
In recognition of our first 45 years, PRAB is holding several events in 2017, closing with our 45th Anniversary Gala on Friday, October 13, at the Pines Manor in Edison. We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate our work and accomplishments, and recognize several individuals and institutions who’ve made lasting contributions to Central New Jersey and PRAB.
Our Next 45 Years
The next 45 years, we at PRAB will continue to respond to the issues affecting Central New Jersey and our society. We will employ our updated program approach of Service, Development, and Action to help individuals and families identify their assets and abilities, and strengthen themselves, their families, and the community at large. It’s why we’ve adopted a new vision, mission, and strategic plan. It’s also why we’re preparing our programs, staff, and volunteers to serve you better. Even our website, social media, and literature are getting a makeover. Soon, you’ll be able to check out our 2016 Impact Report. Later this year, you’ll be able to access a new assessment of Middlesex County, which we’re producing with several community partners.
Indeed, we’re excited by what’s coming up for Central New Jersey and PRAB. We’re proud of our program participants, staff, board, partners, and supporters, and look forward to our collective efforts to improve the quality of life of the individuals and families in our community.
